I use this as a fun counting activity for my students. You can use any sort of item as counters that you want. I like to use sunflower seeds and my students like using those the best, its is a change from the normal counters and recaptures their attention and willingness to participate in the activity. It is a great way to practice counting and their number recognition skills. I love using the sunflower seeds because it is helping with their fine motor skills at the same time. This activity can be used for any level your students are at. I put out 1-10 for my lower students to work on and then keep adding as they master those numbers. For my middle students we work on 1-20 and again I add as they master. For my high students I put out 1-30 and help them master those numbers. I also use this activity as an informal assessment to help me track each of my students progrees between formal assessments to help provide extra support to those struggling. I have used this activity as a one on one, a small group, peer group and math center activity.
