Automaticity, or instant recall, of basic facts is an important part of math reasoning. Using number bonds (also known as fact families) to teach the basic math facts helps students understand the relationship among a set of numbers. Instead of teaching facts by rote, number bonds illustrate the fact families. Once the student understands the part/whole relationship of the numbers, students can clearly see that when they know the 3 parts of a number bond, they really know all 4 facts.
Number bonds are simple and they’re visual, which makes them very effective.
This activity set is designed to provide practice with basic number bonds, 1-20. Activities, answer keys, and recording sheets are included and are appropriate for centers, independent work, small group work, intervention/extension work, and take-home work.
