Two different viewing worksheets and a crossword puzzle differentiated into easy & hard levels, all to go with the Academy-Award nominated short film, "Sunrise over Tiananmen Square,"
the autobiography of a Chinese art student who grew up a loyal Communist and witnessed the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989 -- a shattering event which led him to leave China for a life in North America.
WORKS WELL IN BOTH HISTORY AND ECONOMICS CLASSES
This video is perfect for looking at China in the 2nd half of the 20th century -- it's a primary source that details both the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, and the narrator also covers earlier events such as the Communist Army's Long March with Mao Zedong.
This video, though, is just as powerful a teaching tool for economics classes. It shows students just what it can be like to grow up in a communist economy, and what things were like in China when the nation began to adopt capitalist reforms. "I was caught between Marx and Coca-Cola," reports the narrator, who goes on to explain how many of his fellow Chinese embraced the changes. The narrator, on the other hand, has a hard time letting go of the Communist ideas that he's learned since childhood. Great for demonstrating the contrasts between the two economic systems, and how they impact ordinary people.
USING THE VIDEO IN CLASS
This 29 minute film can be watched online for free (see bottom of description for link). It can also be seen on the Documentary Channel where it frequently plays.
The video is excellent for teaching about China under Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, communism, capitalism, propaganda, and the difference between primary and secondary sources of history.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS OF THE FILM:
Shui-Bo Wang's feature documentary is a visual autobiography of an artist who grew up in China during the historic upheavals of the 1960s, '70s and '80s. A rich collage of original artwork and family and archival photographs presents a personal perspective on the turbulent Cultural Revolution and the years that followed. For Shui-Bo Wang and others of his generation, Tiananmen Square was the central symbol of the new China -- a society to be based on equality and cooperation. This animated documentary artfully traces Shui-Bo's roots and his own life journey as he struggles to sort through ideology and arrive at truth.
