PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This 33-page packet provides you with almost everything you need to conduct a thermal energy and product testing investigation with elementary students.

In this lesson, students will test the effectiveness of various SPFs of sunscreen against UV rays.

Although this lesson hits several scientific reasoning standards, I mainly use it to teach my fourth graders two different Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
- 4.6A: “Differentiate among forms of energy, including mechanical, sound, electrical, light, and heat/thermal.”
- 4.3B: “Draw inferences and evaluate accuracy of services and product claims found in advertisements and labels, such as for toys, food, and sunscreen.”

This packet contains the following:
- 2 pages of notes to you about how to conduct this investigation, tips I've gathered from personal experience, and where to purchase some of the materials
- 5 pages of detailed lesson plans, including "The Student Will" completer sentences and essential questions for the lesson.
- a pictorial example of results
- 7 discussion questions {potential answers included} and the ability to add your own discussion question so that it matches the others for continuity when displayed to students
- Scientific method set-up slides with both a funky font title and a handwriting title {you choose which best suites your students}. I display these to help students spell the headers correctly, and then write in the blanks as students brainstorm their ideas as a class.
- Matching slides on which to display your class's results
- 1 non-editable recording sheet (2/page) -- students fill in the blank concerning any numerical values so that the recording sheet can match your class's needs exactly
- 3 editable recording sheets (2/page) -- either type directly onto the document before printing, or print blank copies so that students can do the majority of the writing
- SPF labels {2 editable} for your investigation

The packet downloads as a PowerPoint file, so please make sure you have that program before purchasing. Eleven pages contain editable elements; the rest of the pages are not editable.

For this investigation, you will need the following items:
- 1 piece of sun sensitive paper {or UV beads} for each group
- 1 piece of sun sensitive paper {or UV beads} for the teacher
- 1 tube of sunscreen – different SPFs – for each group
- 2 squares of corkboard or a portable bulletin board
- Push pins {You need twice as many push pins as the number of sun paper pieces you have}
