In this engaging and surprisingly beautiful lab, your students will conduct and observe 4 changes in matter.
*Determine if each change is chemical or physical.
*Describe the evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place.
*Determine if the change was an exothermic or endothermic reaction.
You will need the following supplies:
Strong zip-lock bags
Phenol Red (a pH indicator easily purchased on Amazon or other chemical supply companies)
Calcium Chloride (When in a pinch you can use Damprid, easily found at Walmart or other general stores)
Sodium Hydroxide/Lye (I have found this at ACE hardware or you can purchase this from a chemical supply company. The experiment works well if you don’t have sodium hydroxide, just have your students skip step #5 of the experiment.)
That's it! This lab will take around 30-45 minutes.
