With this resource students will apply and practice the following math skills using Super Bowl statistics:

- Interpreting a chart

- Adding whole numbers

- Subtracting whole numbers

- Ordering whole numbers from least to greatest

- Finding measures of variation – lower extreme, upper extreme, range, median, first quartile, third quartile, and interquartile range

- Creating box-and-whisker plots

Included are four worksheets that require students to interpret charts to find the measures of variation of various aspects of Super Bowl game scores from 2009 – 2018. At the top of each sheet is a chart showing which teams played in those ten games and the final scores.

Worksheet #1 involves the number of points scored by the winners in the ten games. Students first order the number of points scored by the winners in each of the ten games from least to greatest. After that they find the measures of variation of those ten numbers. Finally, they use those measures to construct a box-and-whisker plot.

Worksheet #2 involves the number of points scored by the losers in the ten games. Students first order the number of points scored by the losers in each of the ten games from least to greatest. After that they find the measures of variation of those ten numbers. Finally, they use those measures to construct a box-and-whisker plot.

Worksheet #3 involves the number of total points scored in each of the ten games. Students first find the sum of the teams’ scores in each of the games. They then order those sums from least to greatest. After that they find the measures of variation of those ten numbers. Finally, they use those measures to construct a box-and-whisker plot.

Worksheet #4 involves the margin of victory in each of the ten games. Students first find the margin of victory of each game by subtracting to find the difference in the number of points scored by each team. They then order those differences from least to greatest. After that they find the measures of variation of those ten numbers. Finally, they use those measures to construct a box-and-whisker plot.

This resource can be used effectively in various settings – whole class instruction, math centers, cooperative learning groups, or as individual student-work.

An answer key is included for each worksheet.
