My students are so into all the newest superhero movies, so I created something that they related to and love...Super Hero Controls and Variables has several practice problems related to finding independent and dependent variables, controlled variables/constants, control groups, and more. Students will also build skills in finding experimental design flaws, improving the designs, and working on examining data to form a solid conclusion.
This activity also comes with some optional fill in the blank Cornell notes written so that middle schools can finally get this sometimes difficult topic. Both the super hero practice and the notes have answer keys. It also has a few mnemonic devices for students to help learn the concepts.
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
Thank you for your interest and enjoy!
