Get ready for some Super Fun passages that are yummy to read and yummy to make! I’ve combined some real life skills (a.k.a. reading recipes) with reading and math comprehension. These are great for standardized question format practice, “test prep” (ugly, ugly phrase…) and just plain old skill practice and maintenance.
There are 6 recipes that give a title, prep and cook time, ingredients list and directions for cooking. The comprehension questions cover main idea, sequencing, synonyms/antonyms, elapsed time, weight, place value, and brief multiplication in word problem format.
For added classroom fun, throw a “Big Game” party on the Friday before the big game (for football), have students either make a recipe at home and bring, or make some of these together in class, bringing the passage to life and “full circle”!
Extend the passages with students shopping for the recipes with a grocery store circular in your math work stations. Students can choose a team side and graph predictions for the class.
