The Super Sentence organizer assists students in creating complete sentences as well as expanding their simple sentences into more detailed sentences. The Super Sentence organizer comes in three different levels with Level One being introduced at the beginning of the year and progressing through Levels 2 and 3 as the students master the previous one. The Super Sentence organizer reinforces the Second Grade ELA Common Core Standards L.2.1e and L.2.1f with the daily building of a Super Sentence. Each Friday, the skills are reinforced with the students building their own "On My Own" sentence. Only one Super Sentence organizer is needed per week and the activity takes as little as 2-3 minutes per day.
In my classroom, we build a Super Sentence every day. I reinforce the different parts of speech by stating their role in the sentence each day. I call on individual students to give me a part of the sentence. We build our Super Sentence by first stating the noun, adjective, verb, article, and punctuation. As we progress through the levels, we add more details to our sentences including where, when, and adverbs. Each Friday, I call on individual students to share their "On My Own" sentence. I use this as an informal progress monitoring to see if the individual student understands the different parts of speech and the building of a complete sentence.
