At the end of first grade, I have Super Student Readers! I send a note home a few weeks before we start explaining that students will be given a day of the week and on that day they are able to bring a book to read to the class. The students have to practice the book with their parents and it has to be able to be read in 10 minutes or less. I find times that I have set aside for those student readers during the day.
The students love it! I do have some students who don’t want to do it at first and I do not force them into it. However, after a week or two they want to read to the class. After the students read I hand them a Super reader note. (I usually print them on colored paper so they stand out in their book bags.) I try to jot a little note down while they are reading about a positive I saw while they were reading.
