Activity #1: Case of the Disguised Turkey:
This a fun project and writing piece that can easily involved families.
Students will first get a picture of a turkey, which they will disguise as something or someone else. They can use magazine clippings, art materials, or simply draw on the turkey. This can either be done at school or at home with families. Students will then use their turkey as the basis for their story, in which we find out why the turkey needed to be disguised in the first place.
Included are the following:
*Parent letter explaining the project.
*The "disguisable turkey"
*Graphic organizers to help the story planning process.
Activity #2: Thanksgiving Math: Multi-Step Word Problem Task Cards (3rd-5th grades)
This set of 10 task cards focuses on concept of Multi-Step Multiplication and Division word problems, Thanksgiving themed! Each of the cards features a word problem which has the student thinking about which operation to use (either division or multiplication). Perfect for math centers, small group math, or just a general review and practice of multiplication and division.
Activity #3: Thanksgiving Persuasive/Opinion Writing: Don't Eat Turkey! (3rd-6th grades)
You are a turkey writing an article to the local newspaper trying to convince people to eat beef or chicken...NOT TURKEY!! There is an article provided on the benefits of chicken, as well as an informational page on the benefits of beef. Students will use this information to help them write a persuasive newspaper article helping to make their case to NOT EAT TURKEY FOR THANKSGIVING!! Students are also given a note page, a graphic organizer to get them through the planning stage of planning, as well as stationary to write their letter. This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core standard of writing. Please note, I have this project listed as taking a week. This would be the approximate length if you used this as a complete project using the stages of writing.
Activity #4: Thanksgiving Math: Multi-Step Word Problem Craftivity for 3rd-5th Grades
Turbo the Turkey is having a Thanksgiving Celebration with his family and friends. He is telling everyone what to bring to his Thanksgiving meal, but his family and friends need some help, as they are not very good at math. Students will complete 10 multi-step Thanksgiving themed word problems (multi-operation) to help Turbo's family and friends find out how much food they have to bring to the party. Word problems are mainly multiplication based, but students are also asked to use addition, subtraction, and division (of course they can still problem solve using only repeated addition or repeated subtraction if they are not quite there yet). Students are also asked to color, and then cut Turbo the Turkey and all of the problems out. They will then paste, tape, or staple the entire problem together to make a fun Thanksgiving decoration for your classroom.
Activity #5: What Were They Thinking? A First Thanksgiving Primary Source Activity
Students will first read about the first Thanksgiving, while also having the chance to explore a bit more about the first bread-breaking between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. A graphic organizer is included to help students research and take notes about their findings. Students will then take a look at primary sources from the Library of Congress and think "What Were they saying?" by filling in speech and thought bubbles that are embedded into each of the Thanksgiving themed pictures, photographs, and artistic representations of the first Thanksgiving. On the back of each of the primary and secondary sources, students have a graphic organizer which they will fill in based on "What they see, What they Know, and What they still have questions about." This is a student-centered, interactive activity that kids will have fun with, while also learning about the history of Thanksgiving.
Activity #6: Grocery Shopping for Thanksgiving Dinner: Multi-Step 3rd-5th Grade Task Cards
This set of 10 task cards focuses on concept of Multi-Step word problems, Thanksgiving themed! Students can use local ads to help their family shop for all of the items needed for their Thanksgiving meal. Students will need to look through ads to find the very best deals on all of the items their parents need. There is an ad included in the packet, however, it's not the best quality ever, so I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST GOING TO YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE AND PICKING UP SOME ADS!!
Activity #7- Thanksgiving Around the World Flip Book: Interactive Activity for Grades 3-5
