My students love to draw eyes for animals in the style of Hello Kitty, Pikachu, and other popular Japanese characters. So why not do a whole project focusing on this style!
Taking inspiration from the Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami, the children draw a rabbit, a panda, and smiling, rainbow flowers. This is a great introduction to drawing “superflat” characters for young children and working with markers.
Time Required: 45 minutes.
The 14-page project includes:
-Project Overview + Learning Objectives
-Artist Spotlight: Takashi Murakami
-About Japanese Characters + Word Wall (with Definitions)
-Recommended Books + Supplies
-Photo Tutorial for Drawing and Adding Color
-Student Gallery, Grades 1-2
-Step-by-Step Drawing Guide
