Included in this purchase is a superhero-themed reader, The Superhero Kids and the Evil Octopus, great for end of the year kindergarten or first-grade. The 8-page story tells a tale of two superhero kids who must save their town from an evil octopus.
Three versions of the book are included, all of which can be made into booklets on a copy machine or simply printed and stapled. The first book is in full color. The second book is in black and white – great for making copies or allowing the students to color their books. The third book allows the student to create their own villain for the story and the pictures of the octopus and the word “octopus” are replaced with blank spaces so the student can write the name of their villain and draw a picture to match.
*Comprehension quiz, with text-based, inference, and critical thinking questions.
*A teacher’s guide which lists the short vowel words, long vowel words, and sight words used in the book.
*A sight word search, using sight words from the story.
*A sequencing activity (the student must glue pictures from the story in order)
*A phonics worksheet (the student must spell short and long vowel words from the story)
*A writing activity (the student writes his or her own superhero story)
I plan to use this booklet in a small group setting during my summer reading program for incoming first-graders. The book is heavy on decodable short and long vowel word, along with words to practice whole language skills. It is great for reading groups, or even individual work.
