### Description

This free math mystery, “Case of the Super Bad Superhero,” is a great way to add some excitement and fun to your math lessons! Students will be working through a variety of math questions to discover which superhero has gone super bad! It will feel like a game, but with the convenience of easy to prep worksheets.

Differentiate: Use a grade level lower to make it easier, or a grade lever higher to increase the challenge.

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Sometimes the clues are challenging and require logical thinking in the elimination process of suspects. For example Clue #3 is telling students what to KEEP on the list rather than what to cross off the list. Encourage your kids to read the information closely and think about what it means for the elimination process like real detectives. For more logical thinking practice, visit HERE to find some single page logic puzzles that you can download for free.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use this activity as a fun way to assess math skills of your new students at the beginning of the school year. If this turns out to be too hard, set it has a benchmark to try again later in the year.

EASY PREP! Print and go!

*Optional Video Hook added to play when introducing students to the math mystery.

MIX & MATCH ACROSS GRADE LEVELS TO DIFFERENTIATE/CUSTOMIZE

You can choose a grade level that suits your class best, and/or mix and match across the same clue numbers (except for the Grade K and 1 Version) to differentiate and customize the math mystery for your students. The Kindergarten and Grade 1 versions are simplified as a whole and cannot be mixed with the rest. (For example, swap clue 1 from the Grade 2 version to clue 1 from the Grade 3 version to make that part more challenging for some students.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pack also provides teacher instructions, the story, answer sheets, an elimination guide and printable awards.

PLEASE NOTE: The clues must be completed in the ORDER 1-5 that I have put them in.

(For Kindergarten, this doesn't matter as there is no elimination process in that version)
