If you are attending my presentation, Support English Language Learners, at the July 2017 TpT Conference in Anaheim, CA, I can’t wait to meet you! This handout will help you organize your notes during the presentation so please print it out and bring it with you to my session on Wednesday, July 19th, at 2:45pm. (If you are not able to make it to the conference, you might still find this handout helpful for recording your own ideas about working with English Language Learners.)

The session will begin by showing why it’s important to take the needs of ELLs into account when creating instructional materials. I’ll explain how writing learning objectives helps ELLs and present examples from materials I’ve created. Using ELL standards will be discussed and examples shown. Then, I will present tips that will help you create ELL-friendly classroom lessons and TpT resources. I’ll end the presentation by talking about how you can differentiate resources by language proficiency level for the four language domains; that is, reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Whether you are a mainstream core subject teacher with ELLs in your class, an ESL teacher, a Special Education teacher, a specialist teacher, or maybe a coach, counselor or administrator... Whether you have only a couple ELLs or an entire classroom of English Language Learners... Whether you’ve been working with ELLs for many years or are just beginning your career in education... Whether you have an advanced degree in TESOL or no training in teaching English to speakers of other languages at all...

About the presenter, Susan at The ESL Nexus:
I taught English as a second/foreign language and was a teacher trainer for 25 years at universities in China and Indonesia, language schools in the U.S., and at a K-8 school in Massachusetts, where I spent 16 years teaching English Language Learners in all grade levels. I founded and published an online journal for ELL teacher trainers for 10 years. During my public school teaching career, I served on the Massachusetts Board of Education’s Advisory Council for ELL/Bilingual Education, helped write the original MA ESL framework and Grades 5-6 annual standardized assessment for ELLs, and served on several district curriculum committees for ESL, Language Arts, and Social Studies. I have presented at professional conferences in China, Canada, and the U.S. and have published many ESL articles in professional journals and books.
