Many of these statements are intentionally worded to create debate and to force students to look at both sides of an issue. At times they make students a bit uncomfortable as they are forced to defend points of view they may not agree with - an important skill to develop if we are to look at history objectively!
How to use this assignment:
a. As a debate starter in class. Have some students argue the support side, others the refute side.
b. As a bullet list, quick write activity. Have students write 2 or more statements to support and refute the statement.
c. As a writing assignment. Have students write a persuasive essay supporting and refuting the statement.
