Description

Looking for an intro activity for surface area and volume? Perhaps you are wrapping up the unit. In this project, students work in groups to build a CASTLE all while calculating the surface area and volume of 3-D figures!

Castle Creation

In this package:

- Student packet that includes guidelines to build a castle with a group

- Teacher edition with important notes and implementation guide

- Nets for: cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, tetrahedrons, cylinders and square pyramids

- Formula guide for students

- Prize coupons for winners of the "Most Creative Castle"

- Grading Rubric

How it works:

Students first create their own 3-D figure, defining the number of edges, faces, vertices, and the volume. They then work within their groups to create a castle using color and their imagination! Students are asked to find the TOTAL number of edges, faces, vertices, and total volume for their entire castle!

Duration:

two 1-hour class periods

Possible uses: review of surface area and volume, final project, intro to surface area and volume
