This activity will engage your students and get them out of their seats! It will help refresh or strengthen their understanding of surface area and volume and apply that knowledge to real-world situations.
What is the Goal of this activity?
To enhance student understanding of applying the formulas for volume and surface area through the use of repeated reasoning.
What Common Core Standards is it aligned to?
CCSS.Math.Content.G-GMD.3: Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems.
What Pre-Skills do my students need to know?
Prior to doing this activity, students should have learned the formulas for volume and surface area of prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders, and spheres. In addition, mastery of special right triangle theorems and Pythagorean Theorem are helpful.
What will they do in the activity?
Students will use problems posted around the room to set up and solve surface area and volume problems. They will then move to another card which has the answer on it and all the while create a fun phrase using a letter on each card. They are bound to be engaged, provide you with adequate time to work with students individually and break up the monotony of plain practice worksheets.
Is it worth the money?
Absolutely! You will save yourself at least 5 hours creating, editing, correcting, and putting all of this together! It also comes with an answer key imbedded in the activity.
