Students will develop conceptual understanding of surface area and volume with this set of two activities. The first activity, “Chocolate Truffles”, has students build several rectangular prisms with the same volume and compare the surface area of each. Students will create nets to help them find the surface area. (Note: Your students will need access to multilink cubes for this activity).
The second activity is a surface area and volume card matching activity. Students match six sets of cards. Each set of cards includes: a rectangular prism with unit cubes, a plain rectangular prism, volume calculations, surface area calculations, dimensions and a net. On the answer sheets, students complete the surface area and volume calculations. Finally there is a follow-up activity for students to create their own matching cards.
