Students will develop conceptual understanding of surface area and volume with this set of two activities. The first activity, βChocolate Trufflesβ, has students build several rectangular prisms with the same volume and compare the surface area of each. Students will create nets to help them find the surface area. (Note: Your students will need access to multilink cubes for this activity).

The second activity is a surface area and volume card matching activity. Students match six sets of cards. Each set of cards includes: a rectangular prism with unit cubes, a plain rectangular prism, volume calculations, surface area calculations, dimensions and a net. On the answer sheets, students complete the surface area and volume calculations. Finally there is a follow-up activity for students to create their own matching cards.

Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas π = π­ πΈ π© and π = π£ π© to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
