This set of notes (small enough to cut out and glue into notebooks), a worksheet, and an exit slip can be used to have students discover the formula for finding the surface area of a rectangular prism.
Included in this set:
1. A page of notes in which students calculate the areas of all faces of a rectangular prism and find the sum. This page also includes a vocabulary section in which students define "rectangular prism" and "surface area".
2. A second page of notes in which students use the same method to write and simplify and expression using l,w, and h. leading to the formula for surface area. This page includes a practice problem in which students can use the formula.
3. A worksheet with 6 problems includes rational numbers, a word problem, and a challenge problem (find a missing length when given the surface area).
4. A half-sheet exit slip, which can be used as a formative assessment or assigned for homework.
Answer keys and more detailed directions for use included!
