This activity packet includes a warm up and two activities that will allows your students to explore the surface area of a cylinder and eventually derive the formula by working in cooperative learning groups.
Students are presented with a realistic scenario in order to help put the math skill into a real world problem!
Scenario: "Suppose you have bought your grandma a special can of food that she cannot find in the supermarkets around where she lives. You want to gift wrap the can before you give it to her. You are almost out of gift wrapping paper. You decide to find out how much gift wrap the can will need in order to be completely covered. In order to do this, you will need to find the surface area of the can."
This is the scenario students will be in during this activity. Students will really practice problem solving skills and group work skills during this activity.
Students will need to work with actual canned goods. They will need rulers as well. This allows students to make predictions on how they can measure the surface area of the can, and then actually take off the label! Thus helping them verify their predictions and make generalizations, such as that a cylinder actually consists of two circles and rectangle...etc)
This activity packet is great if you want to encourage your students to explore mathematical concepts, make mathematical connections, and really think about the mathematical concepts!
