Every year I conduct a Surprise Book Challenge with my students. I select several books (enough for all my students and a few extras), put them in boxes, and wrap them. I usually do this in December because it's fun to use Christmas gift wrap to make the books look like presents. The fun part is that the students don't know what books are in the boxes. Then students select a "gift" to unwrap. The book they unwrap is the book they read.
This document includes all the information you need to conduct your own Surprise Book Challenge. I've included step-by-step how I do mine every year and a template to keep track of your books.
This is a lot of fun and the students really enjoy it. This also helps encourage students to read different books. I've also used a version of this to assign students to literature circle groups. The Surprise Book Challenge can be done with all grade levels. The only difference will be the type of books you use.
