Product Description
This is a free sample of a short story about two characters with secrets. One secret involves an upcoming surprise party. Although we do not know exactly what the other secret is, we learn that the character feels icky about the secret in the full version. Following the story, talking points and discussion questions review both secrets.

As grown-ups, we often ask children not to tell about gifts, special dinners, homecomings, and other surprises. If the children spill the beans, then they see grownups get upset. So, children have every reason to believe grown ups who say that bad things will happen if they tell other kinds of secrets. Our hope is that this story could help prevent keeping a painful secret, or help someone to realize that it is time to tell about a secret already being kept.

Effort has been made to keep the story gender-neutral and without overt cultural markers to help the story be relatable to as many children as possible. Also, the illustrations have very little color, making the resource suitable for itinerant counselors without access to multi-media classrooms or color-printing. Therapists and parents may also wish to use this story as part of either prevention or discovery strategies.
