This is a an assignment sheet, rubric, and self assessment sheet, for a total of 4 pages. It includes a chart to guide students to their visual imagery. It has been set up for students to create a black and white surreal ink drawing, but could be easily adapted to pencil, coloured media, or mixed media.
This assignment handout guides students to come up with a visual representation of their emotions. For example a student may choose to create a piece with this set of phrases "When I am sad my mind is like the valley of crying monkeys" or "When I am happy my mind is like the carnival of singing hearts".
I find students have a hard time with the idea process, and this assignment helps guide students to that starting point, It is concrete enough for students to catch onto the idea, but still allows for vast creativity to take place. Students are encouraged to make a composition using foreground, background, and middle ground. I am planning to use this assignment at the beginning of the year to get students back into art-making mode. It would also be good with a group of students where you are still trying to assess what their skills are like.
It is suitable for junior high, high school, and also middle school. For high school students this assignment should take several weeks to complete. For junior high and middle school students it may not take as long.
This assignment could be paired well with art history lessons on surrealism, ink drawing, self-reflection, storytelling, or illustration.
