This activity has been designed as a part of a unit on Surrealism. Using the "Surrealism Word List" students select words and create thumbnail drawings of possible compositions, leading to a finished project. While my students work towards an acrylic painting on canvas, you can take this in a wide variety of directions. Basic instructions are included.
The "Word list" has been included with four versions:
Basic list, basic list with some notes, basic list numbered vertically, basic list numbered horizontally.
The words have been selected carefully, after several years of having students work on this assignment. Words give students various options, and provide a wide range of complex possibilities.
I have the students create four thumbnail drawings incorporating at least five of the words from the word list. They can create different versions of the same group of words, or different groups of words, or any combination there of. We spend a fair amount of time looking at composition and how the objects interact with each other. I also encourage students to spend time researching objects if they don't know what they actually look like.
There are several versions of the Surrealism Planning Page for you to chose from:
Basic sheet (with no instructions)
Sheet with instructions for five words
Sheet with instructions and a blank for the number of words
Sheet with basic instructions.
I have also included an example of the Basic Planning Page partially completed with two of my own examples.
