A complete unit of supplementary materials for the Survive the Savage Seas memoir often available in middle school literature. These activities were originally designed to guide the students at their own pace through the unit. This revised activity portfolio can be used to create a work notebook, be part of a student’s interactive notebook, given as independent work, or to supplement what you are already doing. The activities can be given as work for students in disciplinary action (in-school suspension, detention, et. al) or out of school. Print individual sheets or the whole packet. Unit activities include group work, partner work, and individual work. Sections cover Main Idea, reading strategies, vocabulary, text features, reading comprehension, and comparing two texts. Each section has a quiz and a final unit exam is available, as are final projects great for assessments. Students can create a How to Survive Manual, take part in a Survival experience re-creating the memoir's events, and write their own sailcloth journal. Included documents are: Student Work Portfolio, Unit Outline with cross-curriculum connections, unit exam, Survive the Savage Seas experience with sample photos, Skill Quizzes, Final project rubric, Answer key for quizzes, exam, and portfolio, team building activity. Not included: Survive the Savage Seas text or auxiliary materials. The student portfolio is translated into Spanish.
