Surviving the Applewhites
Literacy Unit Description
Surviving the Applewhites is a realistic fiction novel written by Stephanie S. Tolan in 2002 and it received a 2003 Newbery Honor. It is a perfect read aloud for upper elementary and middle school students because it has a variety of characters that one can relate.
Surviving the Applewhites is about a delinquent named Jake Semple that has been kicked out of many schools and his last chance before Juvenile Hall and furthering his education is at the Applewhite Creative Academy. This academy’s only students are the Applewhite children and now Jake; the students here choose their own curriculum and only learn what they want to learn.
This story is laugh out loud funny and has been approved by the students I have taught over the years. (I would suggest reading 2 chapters a day to be completed within 15 class periods and the whole unit should be completed within one month.) You can tell by the length of this unit that you can incorporate so many teachable moments. I hope you decide to purchase my Surviving the Applewhites Literacy Unit.
