Book Boards have added new life to our class novel studies and book groups, and I hope they can bring that same gusto for reading to your classroom.
This book board is meant to be used with the book "Surviving the Applewhites" by Stephanie S. Tolan, and it combines character descriptions and chapter summaries that students fill in as they read as well as accompanying pictures for them to color when they're done.
Book boards are an interactive display students create based on the book they're reading. Book boards as I use them in my classroom aren't bulletin boards but are rather a way for teachers to visually walk small groups or the whole class through a book.
Book boards are a great way to hold students accountable for their reading since it requires them to write summaries and draw about what they've read. In my experience they have also deepened my students' connection to the text, and given them a finished product they can be proud of. They also provide a great way for parents, administrators, and others to follow your progress through the book just by glancing at the board.
Honestly, you can create a book board with a white board and a couple dry erase markers or a bulletin board and some blank paper, but I've jazzed them up a bit with templates that relate to the book and character illustrations students can color in once each character has been introduced, after writing a summary about them. , you could print off the book board elements and bind them together to make a comprehension booklet for each student to fill out as they read.
To create this book board begin by finding or creating a space for the book board in your classroom; I display mine on an unused whiteboard using double sided tape. You can choose to set up the book board with the blank social media profiles for students to add color and information to as well as summaries in the footprints as they read, or you could have students post each element as they finish it. I prefer to put up the whole thing before we start the book and add color and writing as we go.
