I made these guidelines for my classroom this year and I want to share it with everyone because it has been very successful. Our classroom theme is Survivor and I have partnered up with the other intermediate teacher in our school. I am hoping to put together a detailed package of our survivor challenge lists, sample voting card, etc. To make this an entire behaviour/classroom management tool for intermediate grades.
This download explains the rules of survivor and how the classroom management system works. Each month, the students are split into tribes. These tribes are groups for 4 students who work together to gain points for their tribe. They get points for doing homework, completing classroom jobs etc. Points can be given out for virtually any task. The kids really look forward to getting points and you can taylor this to fit your classroom needs.
Tribes can also loose points. Loosing points are for things such as: messy desks, incomplete homework, poor attitude etc. The kids really motivate each other to get points. For example, if one student gains 25 points for completing homework and another student doesn't put any effort into their homework, we discuss how it makes the person who did their homework feel because it means that their points do not count. It really makes kids think about how their behaviour and decisions impact their tribe.
Another aspect of this management tool is for students who do not follow rules and get placed on exile island. This means they are removed from their tribe and miss out on any fun tribal activities during their duration of their time at exile.
Overall, it is a great springboard for getting a survivor theme set up in your classroom! I look forward to hearing some feedback about how it can be improved! Be sure to let me know what you think!
