Suspense stories provide a fun, engaging writing activity for students. Sometimes students need a break from their regular writing curriculum and this is an exciting, but purposeful, alternative!
Synopsis: DJ is helping his dad renovate an old hotel. He finds a note from long ago and learns that a treasure is hidden in the hotel.
How to use Suspense Stories:
Read the “Story Starter” aloud to students. I usually read the starter twice so that students are able to remember the details. Each student will write an ending to the story.
I ask each student to write his/her first draft on notebook paper. My requirement for story length is ¾ of a page but you can require any length you think is appropriate for your students.
Once students’ rough drafts are done, I ask them to pair with another student to proofread/edit each other’s writing.
Students are now ready to write their final drafts! I ask students to use the lined final draft paper included in this resource.
Students enjoy reading their stories to the class. Choose a few volunteers to read their stories aloud.
Use the provided rubric to grade students’ final drafts. I included a rubric marked A-D and a rubric marked 1.0-4.0 for your convenience.
