Shoo Fly, don’t both me! These cards and game are sure to be a “hit” with your students. To play, cards will be scattered in the middle of the room. Students will sit in a line with their team around the perimeter of the room (2-4 teams are ideal.) The teacher will clap or play a pattern and one member from each time will race to find the card that matches. Teams will try to swat as many flies as they can. To make it even more fun, have the students who are swatting flies use fly swatters. You can even find GIANT fly swatters at the Dollar Tree that are a blast!
Differentiation is made easy with this game: to make the game easier, the teacher will clap and say the rhythm for the easiest version (these are not specific to any rhythmic duration syllable system so you will easily be able to make it work for your students). To make it harder, the teacher can clap the rhythms only or play the patterns on an instrument.
To add assessments, once the student identifies the correct card, have them show it to their team. In order to “earn” the card their team must perform the rhythm on the card by either saying, clapping, playing it on an instrument or creating matching body percussion.
