I just love having literacy activity centers that correlate with current classroom themes. This Sweet Sounds literacy center activity fits perfectly in our pretend ice cream shop, but would equally thrill young learners during any center time play experience and variety of themes. I use this center activity along with our Tools of the Mind sound maps to help children associate beginning sounds with familiar pictures that they also use daily during their planning and writing. Just laminate and cut out the cones and ice cream and place them in a basket in your center to encourage children to match beginning consonant sounds with their corresponding letters. The fun ice cream shapes also spark dramatic play interaction as children can pretend to be servers, matching ice cream scoops with cones, and then serving them to a customer who can then check and see if it’s a correct match! This activity is also great for individualized assessment.
