What educators are saying

Nice resource! I printed copies for my students and sent it home with parents for work at home. It would be easy to send this to them to print at home as well. Thank you!

Description

Syllable Division Rules * Segmenting *Activities Pack*

This packet was created to introduce students to the rules of syllable division for segmenting words. It is compatible with Wilson Reading System.

It is designed to improve students’ reading and spelling of multisyllabic words. Dividing words into parts, or "chunks" helps speed up the process of decoding.

Knowing the rules for syllable division can help students read words more accurately and fluently. It can help students learn to spell words correctly.

The rules used in this packet are based upon the Wilson Reading System and Orton-Gillingham approach.

Included in this packet are:

•Why teach syllable division or segmentation?

oThis section explains the importance of teaching the rules of syllable division.

•Key concepts of teaching syllable division

oThis section provides teachers with a bulleted list of the key concepts to teaching syllable division.

•Syllable rules

oList of the rules for reference; can be used for the teacher and the students!

•Sample anchor chart

oYou can create your own chart or simply print this one out. If you print it, it can be placed in a sheet protector for reference during small groups, used in conjunction with an elmo or smartboard to be projected for whole class lessons, and kept in student folders for reference.

•Four options for foldables

oHave your students take notes on syllable division to reinforce the key ideas. The foldable options include both interactive notebook options and stand alone options.

•Two options for Home Letters

oThese can be sent home to families in order to support home / school collaboration. They explain what the students will be learning and give ideas for reinforcing the rules at home.

As an added benefit, the activities in this packet can be used for your teacher evaluation binder. The letters are evidence of home school collaboration. The different activities can be used to demonstrate differentiation. For example, you could pre-cut some foldables or write the notes for your special education students prior to the lesson. The anchor chart is an example of high standards of teaching, presenting your students with a visual. You can use foldables as an assessment option. For example, students can find words in their reading for each rule and write them in their foldables.
