This is a fun center that students can use to practice counting syllables in words. I like to do this around Thanksgiving, but it could really be done at any time. For this center, I bring in four pie pans that I have at home. You could also purchase 4 inexpensive aluminum pie pans. You will also need to print the food cards on cardstock and laminate for durability. Included in this packet is a label for each pie pan – 1 part, 2 part, 3 part and 4 or more part. To complete the center, students choose a food card, clap or tap the word to see how many syllables and the put the card into the appropriate pie plate. When all 20 food cards are sorted, they will create a graph that shows how many words were in each pie. This is an easy way to check their work. There is another quick check to see if they understand that asks them to draw and label one food from each pie. I usually copy this onto the back of the graph sheet, but you could choose to give one, the other or both depending on your needs and time frame. Happy Syllable-Baking!
