Phonemic awareness is the highest correlate to early reading success. And phonemic awareness can be taught, not just caught.
Here is a terrific ten-item syllable rhyming assessment, designed by an MA reading specialist, that can be administered whole-class. Using simple symbols, students select the sounds they do or do not hear. Also, get a reading assessment matrix to chart individual mastery of the elements of phonemic awareness and phonics.
This download also includes phonemic awareness games and activities guaranteed to entertain and teach syllable rhyming.
