Did your students who are struggling with decoding long vowel and short vowel sounds enjoy Syllable Sort 1? If so, then Syllable Sort 2 with Blends is perfect for your class! All emerging readers can benefit from this dynamic game which has the added feature of blends.
These activities are designed especially for students who have been introduced to all short vowels, all consonants, digraphs, blends and long vowel patterns. It was created for students I teach who need a short, fun, easy to play, yet powerful learning tool to know the rules for determining how to pronounce the vowel in one syllable words.
Included is a Teacher’s Guide with a variety of games and activities using the materials in this packet.
Also included are master word lists arranged both by words in each set and by vowels a, e, i, o, u.
This 42-page packet includes thirteen game-card sets for pairs or small groups to play, with enough cards for an entire class to play in small groups at the same time. Each card-set includes up to four types of syllables: closed syllables, open syllables, vowel teams and final e patterns. Vowels are color-coded-yellow for spoken and silent vowels, gray for silent consonants. Card games will be printed two sided, with the outer side clearly describing the name of the game, the card-set number and the types of syllables in the game.
Students can play in a variety of ways. The most fun way is Syllable Sort 2. It is fast-paced, yet challenging, with surprise “turn of events” along the way. Students may also choose to play Concentration or simply work together to sort the words by types of syllables, rhyming words, or homonyms.
Included in the packet are easy-to-follow teacher instructions, master lists of the words in each set and also by vowels, 4 classroom posters (8 ½ x 11), small rule-cards of the four types of syllables and a master for student record-keeping cards showing which game they have already played.
Students will quickly learn to watch for the type of syllable pattern to know how to pronounce the vowel/word correctly, while having fun in the process.
