Syllables- Phonemic Awareness Practice

Overview:

Included are three phonemic awareness activities for syllables: syllable clapping, syllable counting, and syllable sorting. Please note, this activity is included in the phonemic awareness bundle.

What's Included And How to Use:

• I can and focus cards
• An optional poster
• Syllable Clapping- students will clap the syllables in each word.
• Syllable Counting- Students will fill in how many syllables there are in each word. Students can the use clapping hands (included), chips, or any manipulative of your choice.
• Syllable Sorting-Students will find how many syllables are in each word. Then, they will sort the words.
• An answer key

*Teach these in whatever sequence you see fit. I would suggest: syllable clapping, syllable counting, and syllable sorting. However; you know your students best so use your best judgment here. :)

Why use these drills?:

I created these activities because I was really neglecting phonemic awareness in my instruction! I wanted something that I could use as a quick drill with my students or as an intervention. I like to divide these up and do a few each day during my daily review (during this time I go over letters/sounds and sight words.) I put them in my pocket chart and use them with my groups. You can also use these during guided reading or with small groups. Using these daily or a few times weekly, you really see your students phonemic awareness skills grow!
