Hi everyone, thanks for checking this item out! Syllables are super fun to teach and sometimes it can be confused with sounding out the word. I noticed that some of my students used to think that 'cat' is 3 syllables because it has the sound /c/ /a/ /t/. So I decided to make a whole inclusive syllable set that can support them during my guided reading as well as give them ample practice in their collaborative groups!
By purchasing this item, you will have a suggested 5 day lesson (which I'll include in this description) along with materials to make that happen! There will be...
1) picture syllable sorts (color & BW--for easy reproduction for kids to use)
2) mini cards of syllables with visuals for them to touch and count the syllables incase clapping is too difficult (color & BW)
3) independent worksheets non-prep (cut & sort and the cricle types. Several of each type of worksheets)
4) exit slips
5) clip it syllable cards to be used with clothespin to clip the correct syllables (color & BW)
6) syllable game (What better way to reinforce that skill the following week than a game?)
Here is a description of my 5 day lesson plan!
Teach students that every syllable as a vowel sound. We want to build this foundation for it will be important later when we teach decoding multi-syllabic words (much later).
I recommend printing each student’s picture first to draw their attention into counting the syllables of their classmates’ names. Honestly, kids love this anyway :)
I know that some teachers recommend the clapping the syllables method, but another one I want to suggest is having students place their hands underneath their chin. Every time their chin moves down, it is one syllable! This method frees their other hand so that they can use to count! Once they get better at it, you can just have them count with their fingers. In the past, my students lose count when they clap and often times make mistakes. It’s up to you on how you want to teach this :)
Using the picture cards, you can sort out the words by syllables. At this time, it is still guided practice. You are guiding them along with the whole group, unless you think they’re ready to try it collaboratively.
Collaborative groups! When students are ready, you can have them go into their groups and sort out the syllables.
Independent/Partner practice. This one is on their own or with a partner! You want to assess what they know and what you can do to support them! In this download, there are several non-prep independent practice! Along with that, there are several exit slips that you can use as a final assessment!
Syllable game. What better way to reinforce the skill than a fun game? This game is called Syllable Snake (color & bw version of the game mat are included). Using the picture cards that are in this download, students draw the card and count the syllables.
Materials you will need: Game marker/chips (different colored counters or unifix cubes), print game mat on cardstock and laminate them side to side (leave a slight gap between the 2 papers so that it makes it easier to fold), and print out the picture cards of the syllables double-sided.
Following Week – two collaborative rotation activities you can incorporate:
1) Picture syllable sort
2) Syllable Snake game
