This set of word study notebook activity pages is meant to be a companion to Words their Way: Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (the green book). In response to many requests for a set of notebook activities similar to my Derivational Relations Spellers Notebook Activities, I created these notebook activities.
Learn more about my word study routines from my Word Study blog series:
Unit 1: Inflected Endings (-ing, -ed, -e, -es)
Unit 2: Compound Words
Unit 3: Syllable Juncture
Unit 4: Vowel Patterns in Accented Syllables
Unit 5: Unaccented Syllables
Unit 6: Exploring Consonants
Unit 7: Affixes
Unit 8: Miscellaneous Sorts
I created a related activity page for each of the 56 sorts. Many of the sorts have multiple activity pages for students to complete. These activity pages are not your traditional spelling activities but scaffold students to go into deeper analysis of "word-studying" concepts.
These word study activities allow your students to analyze spellings, sound changes, and meanings of their words. The activities presented here could easily be discussed in small group lessons with the teacher, but are designed for independent exploration and reinforcement of concepts embedded in the Syllables and Affixes Spellers word study lists.
Based on the level of difficulty of the activity pages and how progressed your students are with being “independent thinkers,” you may choose to have them complete some of the sheets independently and save others for their small group meeting.
This resource is intended for teachers who use (or plan to use) Words Their Way word sorts. (The books are amazing for teachers who implement word study!)
