This activity helps to introduce student to symbiotic relationships. I have always used it as an introductory inquiry activity before ever talking about symbiosis, but you could certainly use it as more of a review.
To perform this activity, give students the Symbiotic Relationships Activity sheet and a set of the Symbiotic Relationship Example Cards. Students will have to read the cards and then group them into groups of their choosing based on common features. They are encouraged to focus on the relationships between the two organisms.
Next they will get a set of Interaction Description Cards. These cards have the classification of symbiotic relationships used by ecologists. Students should re-group their Symbiotic Relationship Cards to fit in those three groups. Then they will take some time to reflect on how their categories compare to that of ecologists.
The final step to complete the activity is for students to answer the analysis questions.
This activity includes the student sheet, answer key, and both sets of cards.
