If you're looking for a fun way to teach symbiotic relationships that will get your students involved and out of their seats, this is the activity for you!
In this 20 slides power point students are introduced to three types of symbiotic relationships (mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism), a "catch-phrase" for each and symbols to use to remember them. After going over the information students get up out of their seats and use the rest of the power point to practice what each symbiotic relationship means. This activity is educational, fun, interactive and always a hit with my students! I use this with my 6th graders and my 8th grade students will come back to me and say that they still remember the information from this activity.
Best of all, the only material required is a class set of 3 x 5 cards. You can use a red, blue, and green maker, but the activity can be done with only 3 x 5 cards. Perfect for budget strapped science teachers!
After you've done this activity you can reinforce symbiotic relationships and integrate language arts by having your students write Symbiotic Love Letters
