This mini-lesson includes 4 PowerPoint slides presenting students with definitions of symbol, motif, and theme and accompanying examples from Barbara Kingsolver's novel The Poisonwood Bible. This is intended to be an introductory lesson to a larger discussion of these literary elements.
My students read the novel in the summer, and I use this lesson at the beginning of our work together, not only to ensure they understand these concepts, but also to exemplify the way I want them to write about them.
I suggest discussing the slides and examples and then having students brainstorm other examples from the novel of symbols & motifs that exemplify themes. They can work in pairs, small groups, or as a whole class.
