In this standards-aligned symbolism analysis, students will move up Bloom’s Taxonomy through an “I-Do, We-Do, You-Do” class structure. The end product will be a constructed response, in which students explain the significance of a symbol they found in their novel.

Mini-Lesson: Direct instruction on symbolism with a real-life connection.

Guided Practice: Guided reading and analysis on selected passages from Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

Sample Constructed Response: A mentor constructed response that explains the significance of a symbol using text support.

Student Activity: Students will complete a graphic organizer to analyze passages including their symbol.

Constructed Response Prompt: Students will write their own constructed response explaining the significance of their chosen symbol.
