Using video clips from pop culture, teachers will provide students with a high interest gateway into the world of symbolism in literature. By incorporating clips from "The Lord of the Rings," "The Three Little Pigs," and/or "The Tortoise and the Hare" teachers will guide students into the literary use of symbol to create theme. The lesson provides introductory activities and links to youtube video clips, formative assessments, an example written responses, and an option formative assessment based upon Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." This lesson could also be adapted to any other literary work where symbolism is prominently featured if "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" isn't part of your curriculum. The lesson/mini-unit is broken up into 5 segments with "Sinners" being the final component. The first 4 steps can be taught as a stand alone unit or as an introduction to another work.
