This is easily the best lesson I teach for The Scarlet Letter. I typically use this after reading chapter 6, but it can be used virtually anywhere in the novel. Students utilize a graphic organizer to chart and share their findings on an assigned symbol(s) from The Scarlet Letter after researching the symbol using a reputable website on conventional symbolism and an online text of The Scarlet Letter. I used this lesson years ago for a formal observation when I was a first-year teacher, and it went extremely well. Also included in the product is a teacher sample response for how to complete the graphic organizer.
