This Smartboard lesson will help students learn what symbolism is and why authors use it. The first few slides will go over the definition and give examples using text as a model. Other slides show how symbols in a text can be a whole range of things including: colors, weather, elements, animals, seasons, common everyday objects, and places. Examples and how symbolism is used are given on each of these topics. (Have students take notes on these in interactive notebooks). Also addressed in this Smartboard lesson is how everything in a story is not necessarily symbolic (it must be contrasted with something else). An example is given for students to see as a model. The last slide is an activity for students to complete using symbolism in their own life.
This Smartboard lesson is all you need to teach symbolism: notes, models to use, and an independent activity.
