To learn about some of the many symbols that represent the United States.
1 class period
You can begin this activity by reading the introductory paragraph with the class that mentions some of the most famous symbols associated with the United States.
Students then read through a series of 35 sentences arranged into the following sections:
• United States Flag
• Great Seal of the United States
• Liberty Bell
• Pledge of Allegiance
• Star-Spangled Banner
• Statue of Liberty
• Uncle Sam
As they work their way through the sentences, class members must fill in missing words, names, and terms. One or more letters in each answer have been given as clues.
NOTE: You may want to give the students the option of working individually or with one other person. Also, this lesson can be used as a contest or game.
Teacher Instructions are included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment or used later on as a review exercise.
