These are the centres and printables I use to teach & practice symmetry in my Kindergarten classroom!
Here is what's included:
p. 4: 5 Day Lesson Plans
p. 5-9: Shape Cards: Print these on coloured cardstock and cut them out. Use them to demonstrate how a symmetrical shape has two equal parts and overlaps exactly when folded on the line of symmetry in the lesson for Day 1.
p. 10-13: Predict the Shape Symmetry Cards: Print these on coloured cardstock or white paper and use them for the lesson on Day 2.
p. 14: Predict the Shape Symmetry Centre: Cut these out on the grey line so that you have squares. Students can fold the cards on the dotted line, predict the shape, cut on the solid line and then open up to see if their predictions were correct. They can also cut the shape on the line of symmetry and overlap the two sides to see how they overlap exactly.
p. 15-16: Line of Symmetry Centre: I set these sheets out with a small frameless rectangular mirror or mira. Students lay the mirror perpendicular to the paper to see if they can find a line of symmetry and draw them in. For my high achievers I also challenge them to find the shapes with more than one line of symmetry.
p. 17-42: Complete the Shape: I laminate and bind these pages to make it into a dry-erase book. Students are asked to draw the other side of the shape from the line of symmetry so that the shape is symmetrical. You can choose from 3 covers (full colour, partial colour and black & white) and 2 types of pages (all tracing or fill in the blank). Please choose and print the pages that work best for your group!
p. 43-60: Letter & Number Symmetry: Print and laminate the cards and set them out with a small frameless rectangular mirror or mirra. Students use the mirror or mirra to see if they can find a line of symmetry and determine if the letter or number is symmetrical or not symmetrical. Students use a dry-erase marker to record their findings by checking the boxes at the bottom.
p. 61-62: Letter & Number Symmetry Recording Sheets: Optional recording sheet for students who want to keep track of the letters they have investigated with the Letter & Number Symmetry Cards centre.
p. 63-75: Pattern Block Symmetry Pictures: Print, laminate and set out with pattern blocks. Students are invited to complete the other side to make a symmetrical picture. There is a blank page included where students can make their own symmetrical picture or play a partner game (that you demonstrated whole group in the Day 4 lesson).
p. 76-82: Grid Symmetry: Print, laminate and set out with coloured cubes or tiles. Students are invited to complete the other side to make a symmetrical picture. There is a blank page included where students can make their own symmetrical picture or play a partner game (that you demonstrated whole group in the Day 5 lesson).
Please see the preview for a more detailed look at what is included.
