Description

Make poem analysis and compare easy with these “Sympathy” Analysis, Paired Poems. This resource includes three poems: “Sympathy” (Paul Laurence Dunbar); “’Hope’ is the Thing with Feathers” (Emily Dickinson); and “Caged Bird” (Maya Angelou). Each included poem, powerful in its own right, uses bird imagery to discuss hope amidst struggles.

Lead your students through these three poems as they examine how authors from different backgrounds and time periods treat the theme of perseverance and hope through trials. Students will annotate and analyze figurative language, diction, theme, and more.
