I designed this product to be a student-centered activity for kids to practice applying knowledge of synonyms and antonyms, practice using dictionaries and thesauruses, and expand students’ vernacular with high-level vocabulary words. This file includes 40 different “Words of the Week” cards to be extended over an entire school year. For each word of the week are 3 synonym cards and 3 antonym cards. Simply print each set, laminate and cut apart. You can display the 7 word cards for one week in any standard pocket chart or with sticky clips. You just need a little wall space, a bulletin board, or an easel. This is intended to be used as a weekly center, but could also be used as a whole-group activity, with a small group, or with a partner.
When students go to this center they can work independently, with a partner or with a small group to sort the synonym and antonym cards. Students will need access to a dictionary, thesaurus or an online dictionary to look up unknown words. If you have ipads available in your classroom I recommend downloading the Dictionary.com app. It is free and easy to use! After students finish sorting the cards they can complete the Synonyms & Antonyms recording page. You can print these pages individually for students to turn in as an accountability piece, or you can print the whole years’ worth of Synonym & Antonym of the Week recording pages and staple them as a packet. I've included a cover page you can use for your packets if you choose to go that route.
